Are tail lights normally in such danger as to justify these?

On my Bronco 2, I had some tailight covers, and upon impact, they protected the plastic lense, but bent up the metal body around the tailight. Ouch. took some holes and pulling, bondo, and paint, then traded it in for the trooper. Good trade...89 Bronco 2 for a 93 Trooper RS. Both 6 cylinder, just that the seller wanted an automatic transmission and something a little more Zippy. All in all, my tailight covers hurt more than protected. they did thier job though, protect the tailight(not the body the guards are screwed into).

I am a little pissy when it comes to these... I'm sure they have their place somehow, just as brush guards probably do. I wouldn't worry about them though, i think they are more for show.
for example, if you are back up while turning you might boink the tail lights against something, but thats just your fault, be careful when backing up. as well, as mentioned above, if they are flimsly, and i cant see too many of them having super strong attachment points, they can deform and do more damage than just knocking out your tail lights. if someone hits you from behind, if its straight on i 'd see the bumper and spare tire taking the hit before your guards.
same with brushguards. Some look reinforced enough in the CENTER to help with a slow frontal impact, but if something hit the part of a brushguard that protects the headlights, well, i'd kiss the headlights goodbye, and expect repair to possibly the quarter panel and brush guard itself.
what i'm saying is i would go for a steel bumper and dont worry about the smaller doo dads ;D
