Unless they are awesome speakers, don't use 4" speakers in the rear. I bought a set of Infinity Kappa 42.5i spearkers for the rear, and man, do I wish I'd gone with 5 1/4-ers. The sound difference is incredible, and 5 1/4-ers will fit, with just a little persuasion. There's plenty of depth.
4" speakers are never going to be good, I don't care who makes 'em. There's $60 I wish I had back. I'd have left the stockers in for that money.

Sorry Man. Thanks for the warning. Im gonna go with the wal-mart pioneers for the front, and some cheap-os for the rear. some 2 for $20 Lightning audio speakers. I should name my trooper the "El barato proyecto" or "The Cheap Project". Its a daily driver, but hey...im a student. I know once i get a job(somewhere, over the rainbow), I will have some more cash flow to get parts. Im living off the money made from a recent accident in my 71 VW Superbeetle. Thats another story...

superbeetles rule - my buddy in HS had one, the clutch felt like a pedal with a piece of yarn attached somewhere to the cluth, it was a unique vehicle. Louder than zeus throwing a lighting bolt too.
ERS - i feel you on the 4" - i had a VERY bad experience similar to yours... iblew my factory rear speakers and replaced them the cheap way - $9 radio shack replacements. I was so upset I wasted 20 bucks on what sounded like 2 sony walkman headset speakers in each rear corner, weakest POS's i'd ever heard.
Yo IsuzuRS - you have an isuzu head unit or aftermarket? Dont know if you'd blow them or what, but Bestbuy.com (and i'm assuming the chains as well) have lighting audio 6.5" speakers for like 11.99 a pair, dont know bout the 5 1/4 but they may be super cheap right now too.

I have an after market. Pioneer head usit, 180total(45x4). Well, I hope I don't. If so, cheap mistake. I found a $50 bill on the floor in my shop class, Gonna wait and see if anyone's missing it(asks if anyones seen it). Im not gonna ask if anyone's missing $50, cause most HS kids would lie. Looks like im ready for some new speakers!

I mean to imply I will never again go with cheap speakers, especially radio shack speakers. Lesson learned. I'm sure a 4" speaker could sound as good as a 5 1/4" speaker, I'm sure that 4" speaker would be a high dollar speaker also. Personally i'm trying to hit a middle ground is all... I dont want to pay top dollar for the best right now, so i'm finding a middle ground on price (50-80 bucks per set) and finding some good stuff out there. Checking www.epinions.com is good too, loads of reviews on speakers/etc there. I've heard some rockford fosgate component speakers that sounded insane! 6 1/2's with tweeters, i guess the crossover makes a big difference in sound also, i just cant afford to pay 250 for a set of speakers right now. haha probably would if i could though. Brad - if you are into car stereo stuff, can you contribute some to the other threads? i've got a few q's up right now

Well, it all boils down to what each of us as individuals thinks sounds good. All I'm saying is that from my personal experience, I've never heard a 4" speaker perform like I would like it to. If you dig your 4" speakers, rock on. I'm just saying that they don't do it for me. To each his own, right?
