My antenna is the hood mount metal type, about 35 feet long. when i get up to about 55mph and beyond, there is a LOUD buzzing noise from right around the antenna that you can hear LOUD inside the cab. It sucks. I have to crank music to drown out the sound. I am thinking about replacing it with a lower profile rubber antenna off ebay to see if it cuts down on the wind noise. I tried to remove the metal antenna by hand, it wouldn't budge. is there a special tool or anything I should use to get it off of there?

If you read the instructions from the rubber antenna guy on ebay, it tells you how to remove same. I had no clue until I read that. I've got to replace mine since Hurricane Isabel decided she didn't quite like the looks of my stock antenna and sent a good size branch across my hood thus removing the antenna. TEXT

Ummmmm...... Are we talking about the RADIO antenna? 35 FEET? This IS a typo, right? Mines the internal powered kind, so I've got nothing to compare to...

35 feet was actually a huge exaggeration.
I read the dudes ad on ebay, it didn't really say how to remove it, just that his was a direct replacement.

I've been debating this for some time. Since AM/FM radios just receive, and CB antennas are supposed to be (rarely are) highly tuned communication devices, I decided to do a little digging. Sure enough, there's an adapter out there to run your radio reception through a CB antenna, which is a far superior receiver. Running a CB through your stock radio antenna, which adapters are also made for, sucks because the antenna is not tuned, nor was it ever intended to broadcast.
The rub, of course, is where to put the antenna. Many people just buy a magnet mount type and slap it on the roof. This works, except that it flops around like it's going out of style when you're 'wheeling and twigs snag it, and the signal quality is the lowest of the CB antenna genre.
What I'm planning on doing is mounting a four or five foot whip to my spare carrier, that way it's out of the way, but will still flex when I need it to. The taller you can afford to go with an antenna, the better, because the top two-thirds of the stick are more important than the bottom third, especially with "top load" antennae.
So, with a long-ass RG8 cable running to the back of the Trooper, and a creative spare mount, a really good receiver is created for your radio.
If this is something you'd consider, let me know. I'll try and dig up the info. Keep in mind that you don't need to run a CB with this setup, but it would make adding one later really easy.

By all means dig it up, please, and provide a translation into plain English for those of us who can't even SPELL "CB"! ;D
I'm looking for a decent CB Radio that will slide directly into the ISO-DIN slot under the radio (where the factory CD changer goes). Any suggestions?
I like the antenna-on-the-spare idea, specifically because it allows you to have a longer antenna without the overhead problems. I've seen some great ideas of running the coax down from the roof, but not from the spare mount, so I'm looking forward to seeing it. I'm a bit anal about stealth installations of gear.

I’ve had a hell-uv-a-time with my radio Antenna. I purchased a used 02 Trooper in June. The previous owner had done some “creative wiring” with an in-dash CD player head unit. I purchased the truck with out tuning the radio to any specific frequency. Upon investigation the head unit did not have an antenna attached. The factory diversity antenna would not plug into this head unit. I thought, no problem, surely someone makes an adaptor. Well, it’s December and I haven’t found an adaptor yet. As much as I love Jimmy Buffet… there are times I need to eject the CD and listen to the radio for weather/road reports. The CB antenna idea may be just what I needed. I don’t like the idea of cutting a hole in my front fender. A spare tire mount would work/look good. Any ideas on how to make the diversity antenna work are greatly appreciated. More info on the spare tire mount, please post here. Thanks, David

Got anyplace in the U.S. that sells them? I can't even find the Uniden DIN CB's on Uniden's website!

This may not help, but I put on a Firestik hood-channel mount for a CB antenna. My AM/FM is the "diversity" antenna in the rear quarter windows, so I haven't tried the dual purpose thing. I do know that an AM/FM antenna is really poor for CB, not sure if the reverse is true.
I can email pics of the CB antenna hood channel mount if anybody wants. The nice thing about it is you can remove it later and no holes in the fender.

My 98 Trooper (diversity) antenna wasn't working for squat. Even the parts guy at my local dealership had no clue . I ended up drilling a hole in the front fender and it turned out pretty well. The hole is already in the fire wall to pass the antenna cord through to the cabin and the whole process took about 20 minutes. (10 of which was me standing over my fender with a drill bit going.... do I really want to do this?) after I was done I was glad I did it, looks stock and I can listen to my annoying music again
