Here's a funny story: When my idler bearings went down, I thought it may be a lifter or rod so I checked the oil and the stick showed "bone dry"....so I got some oil adn it took all 5 quarts. I then changed to oil after it came out of the shop and my pan wouldn't hold it all! oil every where. My pan is about 4 inches deep.
Is there a problem with the dip stick?

I wonder about the stick, too. Not only is it screw-like, for reasons I can't begin to envision, but it is pretty darn hard to read, too!
Makes me wonder if I'm getting an accurate reading or not!

I thought I was the only one who thought the dipstick was a total P.O.S.
Man, I'm tired of not knowing for sure what's going on with my oil.
I feel like every time I check it's like Russian Roulette.

I think the "corkscrew" pattern helps the stick go into the engine. I wonder if you can get a chrome dip stick that would work better?

I don't know if it's the corkscrew pattern or the fact that the stick apparently has to go around a few corners, but whenever I pull ot out, the oil is so smeared all over the stick that finding the actual fill line is near impossible, even after multiple wipe-and-reinserts.
With this new oil-disappearing problem, it makes me VERY nervous...

ever try to read your oil after changing to Mobil 1 synthetic blend?? Its a PITA!!! Its clearer, plus the fact you can't read the dipstick PERIOD! I would like a digital oil guage(not pressure guage) in my instrument panel, but then I would turn to rely on this as a 100% accurate thing. For now, just guess what the dipstick tells and cross my fingers.

MY OIL INFO: Do NOT go to a thicker oil on the 3.2l v6, the oil passages are toooo small . switching to a thicker oil wil only make it harder for the oil to travel through the passages. ALSO do not use a oil addative that is thick, like power punch, etc . The tick will not stop or even get louder if you do this . Switching to a synthetic oil will help because of the detergent properties allow it to flow better... Thus traveling throuh the very very small passages... thus helping quiet or remove the tick all together.... worked for me... good luck....... (I went to Mobil 1 10-30 synthetic, part no MBI13 with a WIX oil filter PART NO 51334)
